Deputies leave behind fake bomb following exercise, prompts real evacuations
KENT, Wash. — Authorities said a suspicious device that prompted an evacuation of a bus in Washington on Monday was left behind during a bomb response training exercise, according to KCPQ.
A passenger found the device just before 8 a.m. on Monday. Roads in the area were closed for three hours while the bomb squad worked to secure the scene.
While investigating, a few members of the bomb squad realized the device was likely the same device that was used during a training exercise last week. Because they were not certain that the bomb was fake, they had to properly dispose of the package.
The fake device was designed to look like a real pipe bomb, further complicating the situation.
Deputies said they failed to make sure all of the fake devices were off the bus before it was returned to service.
