13 headstones ‘maliciously’ damaged at NC cemetery

STANLEY, N.C.– Police are looking for suspects who maliciously damaged 13 headstones in a cemetery just outside of Stanley.

The cemetery, which belongs to the Springfield Baptist Church and the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, is located at 2920 Dallas Stanley Highway.

Police say that among the damaged headstones is an historic one marking the grave of a man who was reportedly the last slave born in Gaston County.
