Charlotte-area father who suffocated baby while drunk, high sentenced to prison
ROCK HILL, S.C. — A Charlotte-area father was sentenced Thursday in Rock Hill to 15 years in prison for the death of his baby daughter.
WSOC-TV reported that Samuel White broke down in court and said he was sorry.
Last December, he was very drunk and had been smoking pot when he accidentally laid on his 3-month-old daughter and suffocated her in bed.
His girlfriend came home and had to crawl in a window because White was too drunk to come to the door. She found the little girl dead.
In the past, Department of Social Services ordered that White couldn’t be alone with his daughter because he’d left her when he was drinking. He was alone with her the night she died.
The prosecutor dropped the homicide by child abuse charge because White didn’t intend to kill the girl.
“I know apologizing is not going to bring my daughter back,” White said. “I feel like me losing my daughter is more punishment than anybody can put on me.”
White is the same man who caught his pregnant girlfriend when she jumped from the balcony of their apartment during in a fire only five months before this happened.
