Proposal could bring hotel, apartments to downtown Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A multi-million dollar plan has the potential to change the skyline of Greensboro. Developer Roy Carrolll wants to build a hotel and an apartment complex near the Grasshoppers’ ballpark.

The plan would include a 100-room hotel on the corner of Bellemeade and Eugene. The apartment complex would have 300 upscale units.

“We’ve got a city that’s growing up and it’s growing up downtown,” said Greensboro City Councilman Zack Matheny.

Carroll’s $50 million proposal calls for closing a portion of Lindsay Street from the ballpark to Battleground. That’s right where Su Peterson’s business is.

“We are in its back door. We are directly connected,” explains Peterson, owner of Zeto Wine Shop.

As a business owner, Peterson understands apartment tenants and hotel visitors could mean more customers. She’s just not sure if closing Lindsay Street is necessary. “Maybe there’s a compromise there,” she said.

Greensboro’s Planning Board unanimously approved the plan on Wednesday. The plan goes to Greensboro City Council for a vote on Aug. 19.
