DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — A Salisbury woman says she fell asleep at the wheel, which led to her crashing her vehicle and killing a passenger on U.S. Highway 52 on Saturday, according to the Lexington Dispatch.

Elois Cruz, 64, of 410 Heilig Drive, has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle in the death of 57-year-old Lucy Michael of Salisbury, who was a passenger in her vehicle.

Cruz, Michael and 5-year-old Darren Williams of Winston-Salem were involved in the single-vehicle accident on U.S. 52 southbound near U.S. Highway 64.

The accident happened around 1:55 p.m.

The Dispatch reported that Cruz was driving a 2002 Saturn south on U.S. 52 when her vehicle ran off the roadway to the right. Her vehicle then collided with an electrical traffic sign and guardrail.

The vehicle overturned on its right side and ejected Michael onto the shoulder at the guardrail. She died at the scene, troopers say.

Cruz and Williams were both transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Cruz was reported to be in fair condition. There was no word on the condition of the child.

Troopers say the original speed and speed at impact were estimated to be at 65 miles per hour, the posted speed limit in this section of U.S. 52. They listed the contributing circumstance on the wreck report as operating a vehicle in an erratic and careless manner.

Wonder if she will get the same amount of time that that preacher did for hitting that kid at the bus stop. I’d wager not. Just by the name…
