REIDSVILLE, N.C. — A Reidsville man is in the hospital after shooting himself during a standoff with deputies Sunday.

Deputies responded to a home on Iron Works Road around 12:17 p.m. in reference to a report of a possible sexual assault. The report was made by someone who was not at the house.

Ronald James Nelson, 43, who lived at the home, refused to step outside and speak with deputies. After approximately 45 minutes of negotiation, Nelson pulled out a gun and shot himself in the chest.

No other shots were fired and no one else was injured.

Nelson was transported to Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. He was conscious and alert at the time he was transported, deputies say.

The shooting and alleged sexual assault are still under investigation.

So anyone can call 911 and report a crime at your house and you are obligated to come out of your house. That’s not the way it should work. Law enforcement should have more suspicion than a third party call to initiate a standoff with a citizen. Just saying

how is it the cops fault a man shot himself? also @ Phillip someone must have reported the crime then the cops came, if the man was not guilty of anything why didn’t he just step outside and speak with the officers? and there never would have been a “stand off”?
