HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. — A North Carolina “Officer of the Year” is recovering after being stabbed Sunday when he responded to a sexual assault call.

WSOC reported that Sgt. Kenny Hipps was stabbed in the stomach between his bulletproof vest and gun belt on Sunday.

The officer and his partner were to a sex assault call when it quickly turned violent.

The officer’s partner reportedly shot and killed the suspect after Hipps was stabbed.

“We don’t like use of force situations, but this was a case where they had to use force and we had an officer injured because of it,” said Hendersonville Police Chief Herbert Blake.

Blake said the sergeant is expected to be OK. His partner was not hurt.

State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting as part of normal procedures.
