Teen accused of cutting off dog’s ears in Statesville

STATESVILLE, N.C. — Statesville police have arrested a teenager accused of cutting off a pit bull puppy’s ears.

WSOC-TV reported that 17-year-old Alvertis James Hughes was arrested Wednesday and charged with felony animal cruelty.

Iredell County Animal Services reported a call on June 15 that a pit bull puppy had been neglected and had its ears cut off.

The suspect was also was charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty for failing to provide adequate care and sustenance for the pup.

Hughes was taken before a magistrate and was given a $5,000 secured bond. His court appearance was set for July 29.
