Boy, 9, waves flags at Bowman Gray; shows passion for racing Posted 8:07 pm, July 11, 2014, by Web Staff FacebookTwitterGooglePinterestRedditEmail WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The love of sports has been passed down from generation to generation. The same can be said about racing. And not just at the Sprint Cup level, but on the local level, like at Bowman Gray stadium in Winston-Salem. A 9-year-old boy named Blake Spears flies his passion for racing proudly as a flagman at Bowman Gray every Saturday night. Mother Samantha Spears said they’ve attended the races since Blake was six months old. Somewhere along the way, he got the racing bug. And this year, he took his passion to a new level. “It’s really cool to see a kid that age wanting to do what we do week after week,” said Randy Smith, Bowman Gray flagman. Smith even interacts with Blake. He points to Blake to wave his green flag first on the restarts. “I just grin everytime I watch him,” Blake’s mother said.
