ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — A 14-year-old was arrested on Wednesday after a 56-year-old woman was shot and assaulted in the backyard of her Burlington home while she was looking for her cat on Monday morning.

The shooting occurred in the 600 block of Lakeside Avenue around 10 a.m. Monday.

Debra Wilson, 56, was in her backyard when a man approached her. Police say the man shot her with either a pellet gun or small caliber gun and then assaulted her by striking her face and head.

On Wednesday, the juvenile suspect was taken into custody. He was served with a secure custody order and will be held in the juvenile detention with the charge of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting injury with intent to kill.

Police said the suspect lives in the same neighborhood as the victim.

During the initial investigation, police discovered a shoe at the scene of the crime. Officers said the shoe aided in the identification of the suspect.

The victim’s brother, Dan Doby, says Wilson was looking for her pet cat when she was attacked.

“She went out behind her garage, which she spent 30 years paying for, and got the devil beat out of her,” said Doby. “I would call him a man but he`s not, and he never will be.”

A neighbor witnessed the assault and saw the suspect running from the home. The victim was able to go to Robert Dunstan’s house for help.

“She said he just walked up and started shooting and beating on her,” said Dunstan. “It’s nuts. There’s no apparent reason for it whatsoever.”

Wilson was taken to Alamance Regional Medical Hospital then transferred to UNC Hospital for treatment. Her injuries were non-life threatening.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Wilson is still in the hospital.
