RANDOLPH COUNTY, NC -- The Randolph County Planning Board is considering a proposal to build a new RV resort and campground near the North Carolina Zoo.
Jelly Stone Park Camp Resorts hopes to develop a 100 acre plot of land on Crestview Church Road into the largest campground in the county. The resort will be family oriented.
Randolph County Planning and Development Director Hal Johnson hopes a new campground will boost tourism and the local economy.
"We have numerous attractions here in Randolph County. We want people to come and take advantage of all those attractions, and that involves spending the night," said Johnson.
At the county meeting Tuesday night, planning board members will make a recommendation about whether to rezone the land from residential to a commercial environmental space.
Randolph County Commissioners will make the final decision on the resort on Aug. 4.
Developers hope to start construction within a year.
