Hundreds mourn loss of NC teacher; police still searching for killer

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Hundreds gathered to mourn the loss of a beloved North Carolina teacher as police continue to search for her killer.

Fox 8 Cleveland reported that friends and family gathered at a funeral home Sunday in Ohio to remember 31-year-old Margaret Daniels.

Friends described “Maggie” as a fun-loving, energetic young woman who was an exceptional athlete and was loved by everybody she knew.

“Just a wonderful young woman. And, there is no way explaining events like this. It’s just a tragedy,” family friend Mike Cassidy said.

Daniels was originally from Lakewood, Ohio and graduated from Notre Dame College. She moved to Newton, North Carolina, where she was high school teacher and counselor.

Police said Daniels was found murdered in her apartment last weekend. They have not said how she died, but did say there was no sign of forced entry or foul play in the days before her death.

“We were so shocked about hearing this news about her,” said Elly Maranos, a high school classmate. “We couldn’t believe it. The girl didn’t have an enemy in the world.”

Now more than a week since her death, police continue to look for her murderer. Daniels is to be laid to rest Monday.
