Hurricane Arthur has strengthened as it approaches the North Carolina coast as maximum winds approach 90 mph.

As of 11 a.m., Arthur had registered maximum sustained winds of 90 mph and was 260 miles southwest of Cape Hatteras. The storm is moving north-northeast at 14 mph.

The storm is now projected to be a Category 2 storm when it moves over North Carolina tonight and tomorrow.

A Category 2 storm means maximum sustained winds of 96-110 mph.
