Fireworks return to western Rockingham Co.

MAYODAN, N.C. — Fireworks are returning to western Rockingham County for the 4th of July weekend after being vacant from the sky for the past several years.

“Every 4th [of July] people would say I wish we had fireworks again,” said Dee Shelton, with the Western Rockingham Firefighter’s Association, a group of eight fire departments that raised money for a 20-minute fireworks show Saturday night. “We just kind of got the idea of pulling in the fire departments because we know how to raise money.”

The departments raised more than $12,000 to pay for fireworks and a day of events for the entire family at McMichael High School.

“The community had to come out and support us in those fundraising events,” said Shelton who along with the organization started planning the event that will include music and food vendors last summer with fundraisers held almost monthly this last spring. “We started doing at least one fundraiser if not two or three per month.”

The last fireworks show was in Stoneville in 2010.
