ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — A group of six hikers were found safe after being lost overnight in the Haw River area.
Deputies say four adult men and two 10-year-old boys set out on a hike around 6:30 p.m. Sunday evening. The group told deputies they thought it would be a two hour adventure, but it turned into a six and a half hour trek in the dark.
None of the hikers had their phones or wallets with them as they hiked through the river for about five and a half miles on slippery rocks in the dark.
The missing hikers were found about 1 a.m., just 15 minutes after a search team in a helicopter was sent out.
Deputies say the group spotted a light tower which had been put up as part of the search.
Everyone in the group was checked out by EMS. No injuries were reported.
