Insurance agents warn people of lightning strikes during thunderstorms this summer and how to cover possible damages.

Based on the number of lightning strike damage claims from State Farm last year, North Carolina ranks seventh in the country.

Last year approximately 6.2 million dollars was paid toward to the damage of 1,044 claims in the state.

State Farm agent John Klopp said no matter what insurance you chose, make sure lightning is a coverage option.

"Certainly there's ways to try to protect your home. There's no way of ever prohibiting a lightning strike. Some people have gone to the extreme of putting a surge protector on their house but most commonly people will put a surge protector on valuable electronics," Klopp said.

Lightning strikes are the second leading cause of storm related deaths in the United States.
