Construction worker run over on I-85 in Randolph County, hospitalized

RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. -- A construction worker was injured in an accident in the southbound lanes of Interstate 85 near the Finch Farm Road exit in Randolph County on Thursday afternoon.

The accident happened around 2:52 p.m. near mile marker 108.

The worker, identified as a 25-year-old male, was run over by a construction vehicle while working on a damaged guard rail. A contractor truck was backing up when it accidentally ran over the man.

The victim was flown to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center where he is in the emergency room and is "alert and conscious."

Troopers did not indicate whether any other vehicles were involved in the accident.

The Highway Patrol is investigating.
