RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Senate will hold its final vote Wednesday on a bill requiring Duke Energy to close all coal ash ponds in the state.

WSOC-TV reported that the work would have to be completed by 2029.

Sen. Joel Ford said he is upset the bill allows Duke Energy to ask the Utilities Commission to pass the cost of cleanup to residents.

“This was a decision that Duke made and it should be the responsibility of Duke to make sure that they take responsibility and clean up coal ash ponds across the state and not have it placed on the backs of rate payers,” Ford said.

If the Senate passes the bill it will go to the House.
