KNIGHTDALE, N.C. — A North Carolina woman who made global headlines after being paralyzed in a freak accident at her bachelorette party is going to be a mom.

Rachelle Friedman of Knightdale was pushed into a shallow pool at her bachelorette party just a month before her wedding in June 2010. She was paralyzed from the chest down.

Friedman finally had her wedding day with Chris Chapman in July 2011. The bridesmaid who pushed her into the pool was still her bridesmaid.

Yahoo Shine reported that Friedman, now 28, will be able to achieve her dream of being a mother, thanks to an old friend.

Friedman was still able to have children, but needed a surrogate. She wrote a blog post about the decision to look for a surrogate and a college friend, Laurel Humes, volunteered to be one.

Friedman and Humes were good friends at East Carolina University and have reconnected several times in person.

Friedman has already gone through a round of egg harvesting, and there are four healthy embryos in California waiting for Humes.

If the pregnancy takes on the first try in August, Friedman and Chapman could become parents in May or June 2015.
