CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man charged with killing his ex-girlfriend in Mecklenburg County earlier this week died Thursday night from injuries sustained in a car crash.

Jimmy Estes was charged with killing Frances Gutnick, 52, after he assaulted her on Sunday.

WSOC reported that the following day, Estes texted a family member Monday, saying he was going to commit suicide.

Officials say he intentionally drove into the opposite lane of traffic on Gold Hill Road and Highway 21 in York County, hitting a dump truck head-on.

The driver of that truck was OK, but Estes was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.

@Truth-Hurts…obviously he involved another person b/c he has no care or value for another person’s life. Remember, he did kill his girlfriend so he’s thinking what’s one more person along the way?!? So glad the other driver is ok and that I don’t have to pay for him to be fed 3 meals a day!
