Natty Greene’s involved in trademark fight with Anheuser-Busch

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Natty Greene’s Brewing Company is getting surprising opposition to its trademark request.

As the Greenboro brewery started growing and expanding into other states, its owners, Kayne Fisher and Chris Lester, recognized the need to protect their brand. Lester says they filed for a trademark last August.

But now Anheuser-Busch is opposing that trademark file. Lester said it seems they are suggesting the company’s Natural Light brand, often called by its nickname Natty Light, sounds too similar to Natty Greene’s brand.

Lester said they are taking the opposition seriously, but the owner doesn’t believe their local brewery is a threat to the worldwide presence of Anheuser-Busch brands.

As you might expect, Natty Greene’s customers didn’t think the two brands will be confused.

“They probably have too many trademark lawyers looking around finding something to do and they came up with Natty and Natty and Natty, Natty. I mean it’s absurd, in my mind,” said Paul Ledman, visiting Greensboro from Maine.

His friend David Wilcox agreed. “I don’t see any confusion between the nickname for Natural Light and Natty Greene’s. I don’t see how they could mistake that whatsoever.”

Lester didn’t want to say too much more about the situation without consulting with their lawyers, but he said they still think pursuing the trademark is important. They appreciated the community’s support on this matter.
