Mother claims energy drinks led to death of 16-year-old daughter

ARIZONA — Lanna Hamann, 16, was vacationing in Rocky Point, Mexico, when her mother received a call she never expected.

Her daughter was dead from a heart attack.

Kris Hamann said it appeared her daughter has been drinking energy drinks while on the beach. The friends with whom she was traveling told her mother that Lanna was not drinking any water.

On Saturday evening, she had complained to her friend’s father she did not feel well. That is when she went into cardiac arrest and died.

“Obviously, this is something that could have happened anywhere, whether she was in Mexico or whether she was here in Arizona playing softball,” Kris Hamann said.

“(Parents should) make sure they’re watching their kids. (Watch) what they’re drinking and (make sure) they’re drinking water instead of an energy drink,” Hamann said.

Sunday, dozens of Lanna’s friends gathered to remember the 16-year-old sophomore at Sunrise Mountain High School. Her mother plans to travel to Rocky Point on Tuesday to sign the death certificate and retrieve her daughter’s body.

Because of complications with Lanna’s birth certificate, the U.S.-based mortuary the family is using was not able to bring Lanna’s body back to the United States. Kris Hamann said the total cost so far has exceeded $13,000.

The Hamann family has set up an account with Wells Fargo banks. If you’d like to help out, simply go to any branch and tell an employee you’d like to make a donation to the Lanna Hamann Memorial Fund.

1st of all No Kid needs Any energy drinks of any kind. They do it cause they think theyll cool. And because theyre Idiot friends do it.

My daughter was drinking those way too much. Think they can stay out late with friends and survive the day with energy drinks. Doesn’t work that way…causes more heart problems than they realize!

Energy drinks should be taken off the market! They speed you up then you go in crash mode and then you need another, little do the know it speeds your heart rate up then it drops. Take the killer drink off the market!

I do not allow my daughter to drink those or soft drinks. Luckily she realizes how bad for you they are.

don’t blame the drink….blame the individual putting it to their lips….no one made her buy them, this was her choice

Why was a 16 yo traveling unchaperoned? Surely it’s a sad situation, but parents need to wake the hell up, and stop blaming everyone else when something bad happens. Pay attention to what your kids are doing.

I call BS on anyone who claims energy drinks cause problems on their own; usually the problems are caused by an underlying or unknown previous medical condition. I can drink anywhere from 6 to 12 (or more) cans of Red Bull on any given day and suffer no ill effects.

reminds me of the lawsuits against mcdonalds for making them fat. sadly this generation believes in “its everybodys fault but mine”

May be the energy drink at fault, may NOT be the energy drink. Autopsy hasn’t even been done yet to determine cause. Could’ve been a problem with her heart, or she may have taken something else, who knows.

An autopsy HAS been done south of the boarder a few days ago. They suspect that it was the energy drinks. I know friends of Lanna.

Obviously the child had congenital heart problems. What else did she take? Clearly this will be an attempt to get rich off the big name companies. Spun and full of mistruths…

Everybody thinks its about money. Money will not bring back a loved one. I’ve known several people who have died because of them. A personal friend of mine almost died and another did die…yes the autopsy came back and it was from the energy drinks. Did they want money, no, but the company did offer a settlement to not take it public…they simply refused the money. No amount of money can solve the grieving heart of those who loved him.
