MOCKSVILLE, N.C. -- A mother in Mocksville woke up to the sound of her daughters' bedroom ceiling caving in this morning.

It happened at around 5 a.m. at the Sunset Terrace Apartments on Sunset Drive in Mocksville.

"I didn't know what it was to begin with. Then all of a sudden it just clicked. It's the ceiling," said Kassandra Shoffner, the girls' mother.

Shoffner says her eight and 11-year-old daughters were covered with several feet of insulation. One was cut under her eye. Shoffner's boyfriend, Christopher Singletary, had to pull the girls out of the room to safety.

"It's just unacceptable. It's something she had brought to their attention," said Singletary.

Shoffner says she told apartment maintenance about a crack in the ceiling two weeks ago. However, she says no one stopped by to check it out until several hours after the ceiling collapsed Friday.

"I'm very, very irritated. I feel like it could have been prevented," said Shoffner.

FOX8 reached out to apartment management several times, but received no answer Friday.

While a maintenance crew works on the apartment, Shoffner says her children are staying with family. She also says she is looking for a new place to live.

"That insulation, I don't know how long that's been up there. I don't know what's in it," said Shoffner.

The Davie County Fire Marshal said he and the county building inspector plan to check out the apartment over the weekend. They hope to know more about what caused the ceiling to cave in by next week.

I think “trapped” might be a little be of over-dramatization…While this situation was unacceptable, if she was so worried, why were the kids sleeping directly underneath the crack?.

As a 30 year resident of Mocksville….and I have had Friends that have resided in those apartments my WHOLE Life….AND i have lived there once….THE PLACE IS HORRIBLE!!! Your LUCKY to get any kind of Maintenance there! It should have been torn down YEARS ago!!! you see cracks all the time in Places like this…You NEVER would thing the WHOLE ceiling would come crashing down with what looks to be 30 year old insulation!!! Sunset Terrace IS HORRIBLE!

These buildings are overseen by Atlantic Property Management in Greensboro. APM has a crew of maybe five dudes who are almost never here (they work several other complexes as well)

Repairs are “jerry rigged” at best. Mold gets bleached and grows back. Heating and air issues go unchecked for weeks, and the tightwad who outright owns the place lives in California, where he doesn’t have to see the squalor first hand. It’s pretty frustrating.

As a former tenant of sunset, I knew this lady, she can’t be too concerned about her children or else she wouldn’t have 3 kids , her and her boyfriend along with 3 pitbulls in a 2 bedroom apt. I honestly had no problems getting things repaired when I was there . Yes They could use some remodeling …but if it’s so bad then why has she been there so long?

This has NOTHING to do with how she cares for her Kids, I know her and She LOVES her kids and Family as well…..Don’t say things you Just see….TYPICAL Mocksville Gossiper…..THIS has to do with that HORRIBLE apartment Complex!!! Maybe that’s the only place she had to live at the moment…. YOU don’t know and you don’t know her….You should leave your thoughts to yourself!!
