MOCKSVILLE, N.C. -- A mother in Mocksville woke up to the sound of her daughters' bedroom ceiling caving in this morning.
It happened at around 5 a.m. at the Sunset Terrace Apartments on Sunset Drive in Mocksville.
"I didn't know what it was to begin with. Then all of a sudden it just clicked. It's the ceiling," said Kassandra Shoffner, the girls' mother.
Shoffner says her eight and 11-year-old daughters were covered with several feet of insulation. One was cut under her eye. Shoffner's boyfriend, Christopher Singletary, had to pull the girls out of the room to safety.
"It's just unacceptable. It's something she had brought to their attention," said Singletary.
Shoffner says she told apartment maintenance about a crack in the ceiling two weeks ago. However, she says no one stopped by to check it out until several hours after the ceiling collapsed Friday.
"I'm very, very irritated. I feel like it could have been prevented," said Shoffner.
FOX8 reached out to apartment management several times, but received no answer Friday.
While a maintenance crew works on the apartment, Shoffner says her children are staying with family. She also says she is looking for a new place to live.
"That insulation, I don't know how long that's been up there. I don't know what's in it," said Shoffner.
The Davie County Fire Marshal said he and the county building inspector plan to check out the apartment over the weekend. They hope to know more about what caused the ceiling to cave in by next week.
