More than two dozen injured in massive five-alarm Staten Island fire

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — More than two dozen people have been injured in a five-alarm fire that broke out at a Staten Island apartment early Thursday morning.

FDNY tells PIX11 the figures are still preliminary, but of the 29 people hurt, 19 of the injured are firefighters and 10 are civilians.

The injuries range from minor to serious, but none is considered life-threatening.

Approximately 200 firefighters are on the scene trying to extinguish the blaze that began at 1 a.m.

PIX11 reports one resident had to throw his children out the window to neighbors below. They are expected to be OK.

Three two-story homes on Chestnut Avenue have been destroyed.
