Hoke County deputy shoots, kills man during altercation

RAEFORD, N.C. — Authorities said a Hoke County deputy shot and killed a man while investigating a report of a suspicious person.

WRAL-TV reported that Sgt. Samuel Morant fatally shot 33-year-old Sandy McCall around 2:30 a.m. Saturday in a neighborhood in Raeford.

Officials said the shooting happened during an altercation between the two. No law enforcement officials were injured during the incident.

Authorities have not released details on why McCall was being investigated as a suspicious person or information surrounding the shooting.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.

Morant has worked for the sheriff’s office for eight years, according to Hoke County Sheriff Hubert Peterkin.
