Appalachian State residence hall demolished in 15 seconds (VIDEO)

BOONE, N.C. — Residents of downtown Boone heard a series of explosions on Sunday morning as Contract Drilling and Blasting LLC imploded Winkler Hall at Appalachian State University.

Built in 1974, the 11-story residence hall housed 132 students. Because the cost to renovate Winkler Hall proved to be impractical, the building is being razed, the school said.

As a safety precaution, a 1,000-foot perimeter was set up around the site. Safety measures were also taken to contain dust following the implosion.

According to the school, the site will be analyzed as a potential location for a new residence hall.
