CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats will officially become the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday, the team announced.
The Charlotte Observer reports a news conference will formally announce the name change, which was approved by the NBA in 2013.
The Hornets nickname refers to Charlotte’s reputation during the Revolutionary War as a “hornets nest of rebellion.”
The original NBA franchise in the city, which began playing in 1988, was the Hornets, but the franchise moved to New Orleans after the 2001-02 season, the Hornets nickname went with them.
Their new logo was unveiled in December 2013 and has a slightly fiercer look than the ones Charlotte’s original NBA franchise used. The team also announced that Hugo will return as their mascot.
