SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — An overturned tractor-trailer is backing up traffic on southbound Interstate 77 for “over a mile,” according to Surry County Emergency Services.

The accident happened shortly before 2 p.m. near mile marker 90. The driver of the tractor-trailer, James Burke III, 48, of Sunbury, Pa., admitted to falling asleep at the wheel and has been cited for careless/reckless driving.

The truck was reportedly carrying approximately 41,000 pounds of boneless beef.

Burke reportedly had minor pain but otherwise no injuries. No other drivers were injured.

Alternate routes for southbound I-77 are U.S. 601 and U.S. 21.

Northbound traffic on I-77 is moving normally.

It is unclear exactly when the scene will be cleared.
