ELIZABETHTOWN, N.C. — A Robeson County sheriff’s deputy and a woman both died in a jet ski accident on the Cape Fear River near Elizabethtown on Wednesday.

Authorities said the victims were identified as Thomas Bradley Carter, 30, and Charlotte Paige McLellan, 27.

The accident took place near the Lock and Dam 2. Carter had worked as a sheriff’s deputy for more than three years.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office are investigating.

Ofc. Clarence White with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission says investigators believe the accident happened sometime after dark on Wednesay. It is illegal to operate a jet ski outside of the hours between sun up and sundown, White said.

White says a family member reported the victims missing around 9 a.m.
