REIDSVILLE, N.C. — Reidsville is a step closer to replacing a Confederate monument that stood in downtown for more than 80 years.

Back in 2011, a sleeping driver hit the statue and shattered it into pieces. The accident led to a debate over whether the city should replace the statue.

Over the next year, the city will take ideas from artists for a new monument for the traffic circle at West Morehead and North Scales Streets.

A new Confederate monument now sits in Reidsville’s Greenview Cemetery near the burial sites of Confederate soldiers.

Disgraceful…especially since it came at the hands of “our own” folks. God bless the North Carolina Sons of Confederate Veterans´╗┐ for having the courage to stand up and TRY and stop the madness. This should be a wake up call to ALL Southerners! LEST WE FORGET!

Miss Susan, I agree. Our own worst enemies are our own. Disgraceful! To turn your back on God, Country, Family and the Cause is one of the worst things any Southerner can do. Do not call yourself patriotic. Call yourself traitor. I am proud to be a true daughter of 130 Confederate Soldiers. I could never turn my back on family. I would sooner cut off my right arm then betray their memory, not take care of their graves and monuments, not fly their flags but most especially forget the Cause. Deo Vindice!

The Confederate Monument stood in that circle for over 100 years! The citizens of Reidsville wanted the privately funded monument back where it was to honor our Confederate dead and to protect our history and heritage. Instead the City has chosen to tell its citizens to be compliant and that the city knows whats better for them. The city will be spending citizens tax paying dollars on something they do not want. The citizens wanted their monument back.

Jamie, you are correct. Those in charge should be reminded at the next elections. Those who have betrayed their ancestors need to move up North where heritage, family, God and country do not matter. I appreciate all you have done to make this travesty known to those who still have some honour left. Deo Vindice!
