CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Mayor Dan Clodfelter handed over the key to the city to NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson Monday night.
The six-time Sprint Cup Series champion launched a foundation to help fund public education, which is now helping students at Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Cabarrus County schools.
“Public education, as everybody knows, is a huge deficit,” Johnson said. “And we’re so happy to have raised and given back $1 million to this area.”
Mayor Pro Tem Michael Barns said Johnson is the first recipient of the key to the city, according to WSOC.
