Police arrest boyfriend in death of 17-year-old NC girl
SHELBY, N.C. — Shelby police have arrested a man accused of shooting and killing his 17-year-old girlfriend.
WSOC-TV reported that Aaron Byers, 19, was charged Saturday with murder, possession of a firearm by felon and attempted armed robbery.
Police spent much of Saturday investigating Hannah Bickley’s death. She was shot on Holder Drive around 2:30 a.m. Saturday.
Bickley was found lying in a Shelby home’s yard. Minutes earlier, officers were responding to a robbery on Holder Drive, just a few blocks away, when the victim’s boyfriend flagged them down from his car.
He told them that he and Bickley were the ones robbed on Holder Drive and she was shot in the process. Emergency workers pulled the girl into the yard to try and save her, but they pronounced her dead at the scene.
The boyfriend later told police that he and Bickley were out meeting a friend to give them money.
“He never got the friend to come to the door as they were leaving and taking off is when the robbery (and) shooting took place,” said Capt. Rick Stafford.
Police said they believe Bickley was possibly a student at Cherryville High School and that she was slated to graduate this year.
