Boy with autism calls 911, saves mom

A Florida mom says she didn’t know that her 7-year-old autistic son even knew how to dial 911.

DELTONA, Fla. – A Florida mom says she didn’t know that her 7-year-old autistic son even knew how to dial 911.

But Joshua found the courage to step in and help her after she suffered a bad fall.

“There was no one else here to help me. I didn’t know what I was gonna do,” Lisa Kirby told WKMG.

“I was just scared for Joshua. That was my main concern… Joshua, nobody being here for him.”A Florida mom says she didn’t know that her 7-year-old autistic son even knew how to dial 911.

Kirby fell and blacked out while trying to hang curtains inside her Florida home.

She said she woke up on the ground and was unable to move.

In the meantime, her son had found a phone and called 911.

Here is a partial transcript of that call, which was obtained by WKMG:

Joshua: I need some help!
Dispatcher: Hello. What happened?
Joshua: Mommy got hurt!
Dispatcher: How did she get hurt?
Joshua: Mommy fell down.

During the 11-minute call, the normally energetic Joshua stayed calm and followed the dispatcher’s directions, which included grabbing a towel for his mom’s head and unlocking the door so emergency workers could get inside.

“Me and my husband were both amazed,” Kirby said. “We’re like, ‘How did he do that?’ Because I didn’t even know he knew what 911 was.” She told WKMG that he might have learned how to dial police from a group of firefighters who visited his school recently.

Kirby said she has a message to other parents after going through such a frightening incident: Never underestimate your kids.

“He is a little hero,” she said.
