HAMMOND, Ind. – A police officer in Indiana has been placed on administrative leave after a YouTube video apparently shows him abusing a police dog.
NBC Chicago reported that the unnamed Hammond officer is seen lifting the dog into the air by the leach and swinging it around.
The YouTube video was posted on Wednesday. It also shows the officer striking the dog with what appears to be another leash.
“At this time, the Department has observed behavior by the K-9 handler that appears to be inconsistent with acceptable training guidelines,” a spokesperson for the department said.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
“Anybody who loves dogs as much as I do is always saddened and shocked anytime you hear of a dog’s abuse,” said Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr., in a statement. “When you find out it happened with an employee of yours, it makes it that much more shocking and disturbing.”
