GREENSBORO, N.C. — Firefighters responded to a reported gas leak on West Lee Street on Thursday afternoon.

The gas leak was reported at a vacant building at 1231 W. Lee St. at 2:50 p.m. The street was closed between Aycock Street and Glenwood Avenue but has since reopened.

A neighboring building at 801 McCormick St. was evacuated as a precaution.

Chief Mike Rogers said firefighters discovered a one-inch gas line that was broken below the ground and likely rusted through.

Piedmont Natural Gas cut the gas line off at 3:50 p.m. Fire crews have left the scene.
