According to WIAT, the student was identified as 21-year-old John Servati.

Servati was a member of the University of Alabama swimming and diving team.

“John Servati was an extraordinary young man of great character and warmth who had a tremendously giving spirit,” UA head coach Dennis Pursley said. “During this incredibly difficult time, our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and to all who had the good fortune to know him. He will forever be in our hearts and a part of the Crimson Tide legacy.”

It was reported that Servati was taking cover with his girlfriend in his basement during the storms when flooding caused a retaining wall to collapse and crush him.

There are reports that the swimmer pushed his girlfriend to safety before being crushed.

I am sure there are alot of people who have died during these storms protecting loved ones. Whyare they not on the news as well? Dont unerstand why people run to a news site over things to gain fame. Courageous by this man for sure, but there are many more out there to be recognized as well.

Just who would be gaining fame? I don’t think he did what he did for fame. He died, now have respect for a brave young man who saved his girlfriends life.
My thoughts out to everyone affected by the storms.

Whoever ran to a news group to say the story is trying to gain fame for the deceased man. Not like the news is out there looking for hero’s throughout the storm. All of these stories are because people call the news and say this stuff, so someone out there couldn’t just grieve the loss.

Wah, wah, wah! Cry about it, will ya! Do YOU have a story about some one you think should be recognized? Nope, thought not. Why is it that some people would rather find some stupid thing to gripe about than to celebrate the good that can be found in any situation!? I think it’s a type of jealousy.

Because every good deed does not need to be known world wide! This is a good deed that had a bad ending. Sorry for the loss of life, but people everywhere die doing good deeds. If they all were recognized, we would be flooded with news and news and news for them all.

Well then be happy at least ONE of those many courageous people did get recognized… I swear people have to negatively comment on things like this, its disgusting. How bout instead of putting people down you use your energy and voice to encourage others and show pride for any person who is kind enough to give their life for another.

Cheerios!! WHAT PLANET ARE YOU LIVING ON?? GET A LIFE!! DO YOU ACTUALLY THINK SOMEONE CALLED A NEWS ORGANIZATION TO REPORT THIS?? I’VE WORKED 20 YEARS, TWO VENUES, PLACES JUST IN CASE YOU DIDN’T KNOW THE DEFINITION…..
PROTECTING PEOPLE LIKE YOU!!! I WISH YOU COULD STEP OUTSIDE YOURSELF & SEE HOW PATHETIC YOU REALLY ARE!! BUT DEEP DOWN YOUR JUST A SCARED INDIVIDUAL!!! POOR YOU!!!

I would much rather hear about good deeds then hear about how this world is falling apart. Obviously Cherrios has a very depressing life to want to not want to hear about the good in the world. Prayers to the family of the swimmer. He has a good heart to have done that for his girlfriend.
