Students pepper-sprayed during UNCC campus party
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Campus police at UNC Charlotte shut down a party Thursday night, using pepper spray after officials said some people became rowdy.
WSOC-TV reported that it happened at the Student Athletic Center during a Gym Jam 90s themed party that was set to run from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m.
The party was open to UNCC students and students from other colleges as well. School officials said the party was at max capacity with about 1,100 people inside, and hundreds were gathered outside, waiting to get in.
Officials said there was a fight outside with a group not affiliated with the college, so the decision was made to shut down the party just before midnight.
A spokesperson for the school said some people refused to leave and got physical with the officers as off-duty UNCC police were trying to disperse the crowd.
Authorities said that’s when the officers used the pepper spray to get things under control. Officials said no one was hurt and there were no problems inside the party itself.
One non-UNCC student was arrested for affray and another for an outstanding warrant.
