LOVELAND, Co. -- A Colorado woman used Facebook to locate her birth mother.

Joy Willenbrecht was adopted as a newborn and spent most of her life curious about her birth mother. She received a letter from her several years ago, but there has been no direct contact.

"It was just you and me, and I had no help. I just couldn't do it," words Willenbrecht remembers her birth mother, Christina Avalos, writing her many years ago.

Six weeks after she was born, Joy was adopted. Her birth mom was 16 at the time.

"I've always wanted to meet her. I've always wanted to know everything," Joy told KUSA.

CaptfasdfureJoy found a Christina Avalos on Facebook and sent her a photo of herself holding an older photo of Avalos and included a message.

"I'm looking for my birth mother. Her name is Christina Marie [Avalos]," Joy's message said.

She had found the right Christina Avalos and she responded immediately. A throwback photo posted by Avalos helped make the connection.

"She writes me, and she's like, 'It's me. I've been looking for you for a long time. And you're so beautiful,'" Joy said.

Joy plans to visit Avalos in Texas soon, a trip she's thought about for two decades.
