HILLSVILLE, Va. — A Virginia man died in a tree accident on Wednesday and his daughter was seriously injured in a crash while en route to see her father, according to The Carroll News.
Around 2 p.m. Wednesday, Carroll County deputies responded to 7603 Coulson Church Road in the Laurel community.
“Castus Eugene Horton and a friend were cutting a large tree as it lay on the ground,” the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. “Unfortunately the tree rolled over on Mr. Horton as he cut the tree.”
A short time later, Horton’s daughter, Teresa Bolt, was en route to the scene of the accident when she lost control of her vehicle and wrecked on U.S. 52 in Hillsville.
“Mrs. Bolt had learned her father had been injured in an accident,” Virginia State Police 1st Sgt. Mike Musser told The Carroll News. “She did not learn of his passing until after rescue crews arrived on the scene of her car wreck.”
Officials said she was probably driving too fast, but she was driving “as quickly and safely as she could.”
Bolt was transported by ambulance to Twin County Regional Hospital but her daughter, Aleighthia Bolt, 29, was thrown from the vehicle and was airlifted to Winston-Salem.
Officials said Aleighthia Bolt was in a lot of pain at the scene but he did not believe her injuries would be life threatening.
Charges will likely not be filed in the crash.
