Surry County deputy shoots, kills man; bomb robot inspects home

SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — A man was shot and killed by a Surry County sheriff’s deputy Wednesday afternoon, according to Sheriff Graham Atkinson.

The incident happened around noon on Creed Road in Ararat.

An officer responded to a disturbance at the home and encountered a man in the front yard with an assault rifle.

The man made a move with the weapon and the officer shot and killed the man.

The officer was not injured.

The man shot was identified as James Ransom, 55, of Ararat. Surry County Sheriff Graham Atkinson said deputies have responded to numerous calls at the home before.

The suspect was said to have threatened to set traps for police in his home before, Atkinson said. The SBI is sending a bomb squad to search the home as a precaution.
