ASHEBORO, N.C. — Police have arrested a former Southeastern Randolph Middle School student advocate in connection with taking indecent liberties with a student.

On Monday, the school resource officer at SRMS received a report from the principal regarding an assault on a student.

Following a joint investigation between Randolph County Schools and the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, Brandon Cooley Godwin, 32, of Asheboro, was identified as the suspect.

Godwin was charged with indecent liberties with a student and turned himself in at the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday.

Godwin was confined in the Randolph County Jail under a $15,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in court April 24.

The case is still under investigation.

Brandon was a substitute teacher of mine while I was a student at Eastern Randolph and never was there a time that I felt uncomfortable around him. He has a beautiful family and I really do not see this being true at all. Many prayers going up for him and his family during this time.

i didnt know him very well but theres no way he couldve done that. everytime i had a problem people would tell me to go talk to him about it. he has a nice family and there all nice respecting people, theres no way.

This is crazy and the worst part is it happened in Randolph County. We all know this isn’t good. No offense but we can all pray and whatever but when it comes down to it Randolph County is racist. Mr. Godwin really doesn’t have a chance especially seeing that the little girl was a Caucasian and he’s Afrian-American. I don’t believe Godwin did anything wrong. Even if he did I believe you should blame the little girl’s parents because they obviously don’t watch what their child does. I know for a fact that those middle school children try to provoke those teachers daily especially the females. Parents don’t want their child in these positions but look at how you allow your child to walk out the house to go to school everyday. Little 6th, 7th, & 8th graders wearing booty shorts, leggings, half shirts, v-necks with push up bras, and pants that don’t fit with thongs on. Come on now, who’s really at fault? This man has a family that he needs to be with! Look pass the faults that he supposedly did and let him go home. Let him continue to be that good man we all know. It’s funny how 1 little girl can change a mans life in less than 2minutes! Generations have been taught and coached by Godwin but now he’s being stripped of everything because of this 1 little girl!! #FreeGodwin

First of all not all of us as e like that so know before judge and second of all I do truly and honestly beleive he is NOT guilty he is a wonderful human being that everyone should look up to

Like I said no offense. Obviously not ever 2 people are just alike and I didn’t say they was. We all know it’s true so no need for your commendation.

After working with Mr. Godwin at SERMS for several years, it shocks me that he is accused of such a thing. I believe he is innocent and hope that is proven in the end. My heart is sad for him and his family. They are a great family. He has been a role model for the students and I never before heard anything negative about him.
In this country, people are innocent until proven guilty. Proof must consist of more than the unsubstantiated story from a student. I hope the student gets the help she needs. And I hope Mr. Godwin can repair his reputation from such horrendous accusations.
I’m pulling for you Mr. Godwin!

Thank you and teachers like yourself for standing up and doing what is right..I agree with your statement. i am using this sad situation to show mine how something that probably seemed trivial to this young girl, has led to a bad situation that affects MANY others… I still pray for the best for “all” involved in this.

Brandon coached my child for several years. He has a wife and 4 kids. He is a good man. I don’t believe these charges at all. I just hate this for his family because regardless of the outcome their lives will be forever affected. Praying for him and his family.

I have known Brandon for 6 years and he is a wonderful Man with a beautiful family. There is NO way he is guilty. He would do anything to help anyone. He has always been a great role model in the community. The York Family is praying for you. I Hope the truth comes out.

when he coached football he was a great coach at practice he help the players get better to win so who is really that stupid to belive MR. GODWIN would do something like this get the heck out of here

To April, the school can not give out information to parents or the media or the STAFF, this became a personnel and sheriff’s dept problem. And since your son didn’t tell you, the school had 4 to 5 counselors on sight to talk to the kids for 2 days. So if he didn’t take advantage of it that was his fault, it was free. For example: if you did something wrong on your job and had to resign for some reason, your job/employer can not tell the rest of the employees why u resigned or what u did, that info is CONFIDENTIAL, (common sense)

Yall all need to stop judging brandon. He is innocent. He has been a all around good man for all the years I have known him and his family. He is a good man he will give the shirt off his back. HE IS A ROLE MODEL.

  • Ashley

He has a beautiful wife and family. I think one of the students are jealous and might have a crush. Childish if you ask me. I grew up with the family and school. He was always a great guy. I’m 25 now. Still say innocent

I was one of the first people to know Godwin when he came to SERMS back when he was director of SOS (daycare). I spent 3-4 hours 5 days a week with him if not more for three years, I have even played with his kids. I refuse to believe this until convicted. He is a great man and one of my role models and a great influence on my life. We even discussed how obscene child molesters are. So people need to calm down before they bash him and tarnish his name and reputation.
