Gov. Pat McCrory proposes help for military veterans

At an event focused on helping female veterans connect with any services and organizations they might need, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory made several major announcements.

WTVD reported that he told the audience attending the Inaugural Women Veterans Summit and Expo at the National Guard Joint Forces Headquarters that his proposed budget will include $1.8 million to make sure that all returning military members can pay in-state tuition prices for North Carolina community colleges, even if they’re originally from out of state.

The governor also signed a proclamation declaring Thursday to be the first Women Veterans’ Day in North Carolina.

“I think we’re going to have to listen to what they have to say because they may have different unique challenges than past veterans coming home because they were primarily male,” he said.

Also while at the event, McCrory unveiled a new veteran’s designation that will appear on state licenses, presenting several to women from various branches of the military, including Terri Kane who served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division.

“People want to be able to show something for their service when organizations of companies want to provide a discount, for instance, and just the honor of having veteran on here is another way to recognize the honor and sacrifice of our veterans,” Kane said.
