Appalachian State student survives 70-foot fall from mountain

WAXHAW, N.C. — An Appalachian State University student was hospitalized Saturday after falling approximately 70 feet from a mountain while climbing, according to WSOC.

Chad Mullins, 21, fell while rappelling at Little Lost Cove Cliffs in Avery County. He was in stable condition by Monday has since been released from the Johnson City Medical Center, according to the Watauga Democrat

The fall occurred around 1 p.m. Saturday. Linville-Central Rescue Squad Vice President Larry Cuthbertson told the Democrat cuts and scrapes on the climber suggested that “he probably bounced and slid more than he fell.” 

Mullins reportedly suffered a concussion, broken shoulder, broken wrist and broken toe. 

Mullins was one of eight climbers at the site Saturday, six others of whom were ASU students and one was a recent graduate.
