WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Coach Danny Manning completed his first staff at Wake Forest by naming Randolph Childress an assistant coach Saturday.
“Obviously I’m ecstatic,’’ Childress said upon landing the position. “I’m really happy.’’
Childress, a Wake Forest legend during his playing days, served as assistant last season for Jeff Bzdelik, who resigned March 20. He’s the only full-time assistant from Bzdelik’s staff to be hired by Manning, who was named the head coach April 4.
Brett Ballard and Steve Woodberry indicated earlier on their personal Twitter accounts that they have joined Wake Forest’s staff. Both were assistants to Manning during the past two seasons at Tulsa.
Childress, a first-team All-ACC guard who in 1995 set the record for most points in an ACC Tournament, returned to Wake Forest after 11 seasons of playing professional basketball in Europe to become an assistant to the director of athletics in 2012.
He was the program’s director for basketball development for the 2012-13 season before being promoted to assistant coach for the 2013-14 season.
