GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A man facing charges for bringing a loaded gun onto the Southern Guilford High School campus Thursday has been identified.

Kody Wayne Adkins, 22, of Old Randleman Road, Greensboro, admitted to deputies that he had a gun in his possession on school grounds.

"Anytime we hear about a potential situation like this, it's scary," said Cynthia Shah-Khan, director of communications for Guilford County school district.

Officials say Adkins was sitting in a truck in the school's parking lot with a .45-caliber handgun.

Why he was there or if he was waiting for someone is still under investigation.

"We don't take anything lightly,” said Col. Randy Powers. “If we hear about something like this, we respond very quickly."

Deputies were dispatched to the school's campus around 3:40 p.m. Thursday after reports of an armed person on school grounds.

The school enacted its safety plan, which included locking down the building. This happened after buses left campus, so the majority of people impacted were staff and some student athletes.

Deputies located a red Dodge truck matching the 911 caller’s description. Adkins admitted to having a handgun in his possession.

Adkins was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on educational property and carrying a concealed weapon.

He was placed in the Guilford County Jail under a $5,000 bond.

Please do responsible reporting and post all the facts. The public needs to know if he had a valid CCW or not.

The story does seem to lack a lot information. What was his reason for visiting the school? Obviously someone knew he was going there and that he had a gun. Did he know someone at the school? Mighty small bond considering all the problems at schools.

Kody goes hunting all the time! He is a loveable person who would never hurt a soul!!!! HE WAS THERE PICKING UP HIS LITTLE BROTHER!! & accidentally left the gun in his truck! He didnt hide the fact he had a gun to the cops!!

I guess he did not have a conceal carry permit. Wonder why the 911 caller felt they needed to let someone know he was coming? What did they know?

    • FaithC

You are a mo ron and I hope you do not carry bc ccpermit or not, NO guns are allowed on school grounds.

  • MM

Effective October 1, 2013, unless prohibited by a private school, a concealed handgun permittee may store a handgun in the person’s locked vehicle or in a locked container securely fixed to the person’s vehicle while on campus. It may NOT be carried on the person.
G.S. 14-269.2 except permittees can secure their handguns in their vehicle on school grounds. (Note: Private schools reserve the right to prohibit firearms altogether however)

Look, I am not saying what he did was right. Just that if he has a CCW then he was wrongly arrested.
I feel the news media can and will play off peoples fear and purposely not report all the facts for better ratings.

§ 14-269.2. Weapons on campus or other educational property:
    (k) The provisions of this section shall not apply to a person who has a concealed handgun permit that is valid under Article 54B of this Chapter, or who is exempt from obtaining a permit pursuant to that Article, who has a handgun in a closed compartment or container within the person’s locked vehicle or in a locked container securely affixed to the person’s vehicle. A person may unlock the vehicle to enter or exit the vehicle provided the firearm remains in the closed compartment at all times and the vehicle is locked immediately following the entrance or exit.

Typical news leaving out important facts. If he had no license then by all means charge away. I think maybe GRNC might be the people to ask about this. They may have a better understanding of what occurred. If it was a violation of thi guys rights then we need to know. If it was warranted then charge away. Just my two cents.

The fact that they charged him with CCW and Firearm on Educational property should be a clue to those who are questioning if he had a CCW permit. If he did have a permit, he would not likely have been charged with either offense. Additionally, an officer’s decision to arrest is reviewed by a magistrate who determines if there is probable cause, therefore, the officer is not the only person who is deciding if a suspect should be charged. I’m not saying that he should or should not have been charged, just that it was very unlikely that he had a CCW permit. Those types of details would likely be saved for trial anyway.

we need more info on this story, if he had ccw and was in his vehicle, by law he did nothing wrong. i have ccw and i drive my daughter to school every morning with my firearm in m console. with the new laws that came in effect October 1, that is completely legal. i even coach at this school and once again my firearm is with me. Only difference is now to be legal i must lock my doors and leave that firearm inside the vehicle while im coaching. i am not a criminal but they are out there. i feel safer for myself and the kids i coach knowing that with a trip to my vehicle i can put a stop to a bad situation if need be.

It could be that law enforcement isn’t releasing any more info at this time. FM 94.5 is reporting on it & they aren’t giving any more info than Fox8.

Really? Right now y’all are worried about if he was wrongly arrested for having a gun in his car or not? He was out there to shot someone, and you’re worried about him having permits to carry the gun or not? You need to be more concerned with the safety of the students not if he was wrongly arrested, which he was not, he had every right to be arrested he had a plan. He wasn’t there for no reason, common sense tells you that.

Dallas I don’t read in the article he was out there to shoot someone. Maybe he was picking up his kid, I don’t know just like you don’t know he was going to shoot someone.

I have yet to see any information or comments on just who the 911 caller was. In my opinion, this whole story stinks of someone setting up the man arrested. It reeks of someone who knew the defendant and knew he was going to be at the school for whatever reason, and wanted to see him arrested so they called 911 and reported that he was going to the campus with a gun. An earlier commenter posted that he was only at the school to pick up a younger brother. Yet someone knew he likely had a gun in the vehicle and called 911. There is more going on here, smells like a setup to me. Wish Fox8 would actually follow up on this story with more details.
