GREENSBORO, N.C. — A man facing charges for bringing a loaded gun onto the Southern Guilford High School campus Thursday has been identified.
Kody Wayne Adkins, 22, of Old Randleman Road, Greensboro, admitted to deputies that he had a gun in his possession on school grounds.
“Anytime we hear about a potential situation like this, it’s scary,” said Cynthia Shah-Khan, director of communications for Guilford County school district.
Officials say Adkins was sitting in a truck in the school’s parking lot with a .45-caliber handgun.
Why he was there or if he was waiting for someone is still under investigation.
“We don’t take anything lightly,” said Col. Randy Powers. “If we hear about something like this, we respond very quickly.”
Deputies were dispatched to the school’s campus around 3:40 p.m. Thursday after reports of an armed person on school grounds.
The school enacted its safety plan, which included locking down the building. This happened after buses left campus, so the majority of people impacted were staff and some student athletes.
Deputies located a red Dodge truck matching the 911 caller’s description. Adkins admitted to having a handgun in his possession.
Adkins was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on educational property and carrying a concealed weapon.
He was placed in the Guilford County Jail under a $5,000 bond.
