WINTER PARK, Fla. — The man who police say fled the scene after his SUV hit a car, sending it into a Winter Park day care center, killing a 4-year-old girl, turned himself in to authorities Thursday, Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Maj. Cindy Williams said.

Robert Alex Corchado, who Williams earlier said had gang ties as well as numerous drug arrests, surrendered at the Orange County jail, according to a tweet from the county’s sheriff department.

A warrant for his arrest had been issued early Thursday after, authorities say, Corchado was driving a Dodge Durango that hit a car, sending it into a crowded KinderCare. One girl died from injuries sustained in the accident and 13 other children were injured as was one adult.

Corchado fled the scene and ditched his Dodge Durango before renting another SUV, Williams said at an earlier news conference. The warrant alleges Corchado left the scene of an accident “with death.”

Bond was set at $100,000, according to an arrest affidavit.

Little girl ‘deserved so much more’

Lily Quintus, 4, was among 50 children at a KinderCare in Winter Park when a car slammed through a wall. She died later at a hospital.

Her mother, Nicole Quintus, is devastated, the New York Daily News reported.

“I have no idea how I’m supposed to survive after this. I don’t know how I’m supposed to go back to a daily routine. I’m wandering about, lost,” she told the paper.

Nicole Quintus called her daughter “painfully beautiful” and said, “She was incredible and she deserved so much more.”

Lily’s 7-year-old brother aspires to be an engineer and is building a time machine out of his Erector set so he can bring his sister back, the Daily News reported.

Lily’s father is a paramedic with the Groveland Fire Department and one of his coworkers set up a page so people could donate funds for the funeral.

Manhunt underway

Williams said Corchado, 28, rented a black Mazda SUV on Wednesday afternoon after fleeing the accident.

Corchado’s Dodge Durango was found abandoned a few hours after the crash.

Twelve children and one adult were taken to four nearby hospitals, said John Mulhall, a spokesman for Orange County Fire Rescue. Two other people were treated at the scene.

One child was pinned by the car that was knocked into the day care through a front wall.

“It was tragic,” Jeezy Jenkins told CNN affiliate WKMG. He was working on a nearby roof when the accident happened.

“It was just kids on the ground and there was teachers giving CPR. It was horrible. I’ve never seen nothing like that before, and I hope I never have to see something like that again.”

The driver of the car that was forced into the day care center wasn’t injured. He waited at the scene as workers loaded his car onto a tow truck.

“We are heartbroken that several of the children in our care and an adult were injured in an accident today,” KinderCare said in a prepared statement. “We are pulling for those who have been injured to quickly recover from this tragic accident.”

There were about 50 children in the day care at the time of the incident.

Monte said a telephone tip helped authorities find the missing Durango.

You’re right & just wait until there’s about 25 Million more of these Thugs that’s coming in across the Border illegally & sometimes with the Help of Politicians, America is Doomed sure enough….

They assume every hispanic is illegal. That’s what racist do. They also like to use ANY opportunity to try to talk about their political agenda, even when it is completely inappropriate to do so! Maybe we need to start deporting dumb and uncaring racist!!

You find a way to make this political, really? A child is dead, let’s get our priorities straight here. There are all kinds of people on drugs, and this could have been anyone of those who did this. This is not a time to bring politics into the picture. People always have to bring politics or religion into EVERYTHING!! it makes me sick!! I’m sure the little girls family hasn’t considered that. Some people have no compassion and they use every scenerio to prove their point about something. Get over yourself for 5 minutes!!

You care what we say. I’m glad you admit to being unimportant. I’ll still call you racist, I’ve read other post by you.
I really would like to hear a logical explanation of what his citizenship has to do with this crime. It’s not as simple as “if he was deported this incident would never had happened”, so please explain away.

This is heartbreaking. If he is a known gang member and has numerous arrests why is he out of jail? There needs to be much harsher punishment for scum like this. How about years of hard labor.
I feel so sorry for the family of this child.

Will you give Christians a bad name with the way you comment on things. One comment you’re praising God and the next your calling people names. You need to go to the book of James and read chapter 3, particularly verse 11 but I would recommend the whole book of James. I think it is great that you’re for God but then I read some of your name calling and I think how can he be for God if he does this? I used to do the same thing my friend, not anymore. If people want to call me names that is fine, I don’t have to answer for what other people do, I have to answer for what I do.
