Basketball superstar Magic Johnson stopped in Durham Tuesday to speak with students at the Magic Johnson Bridgescape Academy and promote high school graduation rates.

WTVD-TV reported that the NBA great said he believes in giving students a second chance at school, and that’s why he’s behind the free alternative school for students who have dropped out of traditional high school.

Dropping out is something he knows something about. He left Michigan State early to go pro.

“I left school because I had a good paying job waiting for me with the Lakers! And then I turned that good paying job into a business now, that I employ over 50,000 minorities across this country. So these young people gotta understand that education is the key,” he said.

Johnson gave the students more than a pep talk. He answered their questions about succeeding in life and business.
