Toddler accidentally shoots, kills 11-year-old sister

PHILADELPHIA — An 11-year-old Philadelphia girl is dead after police believe her 2-year-old brother got hold of a loaded gun and shot her.

According to WCAU, 11-year-old Jamara Stevens was killed when she and her three siblings were playing with a .357 caliber handgun with an 8-inch barrel in their home just before 10 a.m. Saturday.

Police say the 2-year-old pointed the gun in the direction of his sister and pulled the trigger. They say they found traces of gunpowder on the boy.

Police say the fatal bullet struck the girl’s shoulder and then traveled to her chest.

It was reported that the mother was home Saturday morning with her children, but left the room just before the shooting occurred.

Police believe the mother’s boyfriend had brought the gun to the house earlier that day and placed it on top of the refrigerator.

Police say they do not know how the gun ended up in the bedroom.

Authorities say the girl was rushed to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, but died a short time later.

The incident is under investigation.

so this means that the mother saw the children with the gun???? Why didnt she take it from them and just leave the room? Why did she just walk out whild they had the gun?

No YOU should be charged as a BLEEDING heart Liberal Yankee. You know, the ones that has NO sense…. You’re talking without the first bit of LOGIC but only emotions, and that is shallow and vain…

Mike Lamb, you sound like a complete idiot. Seriously, don’t comment if you can’t form a proper sentence.

Why did she just walk out whild they had the gun?
Because she didn’t want Wayne LaPierre or anyone else from the NRA to accuse her of “rounding up all of the guns & taking away everyone’s 2nd Amendment rights.

My wife and I do not have kids ourselves and our home is rarely frequented by children but when family or friends visit, my guns are locked in the gun safe for this very reason.

And I want to request everyone on here, please do not paint all gun owners with the same wide brush. A few irresponsible gun owners do not nor have they ever represented the vast majority of us who put safety first and foremost. Also a few news reports do not represent the majority either.

Something sounds off. First of all gun powder residue or not a two year old wouldn’t have the strength or the ability to aim a gun. Second why were the children playing with the gun if you are going to own a gun which everyone has a right too under the constitution you should demonstrate proper procedure to keep it away from children.

Mike Lamb, you do know that in North Carolina (a southern state, by the way), the parents CAN be charged WITH A FELONY for failing to properly store a weapon. That’s not “bleeding heart liberalism;” that’s the law. The more you know…

How does a 2 yr old handle the recoil of a .357 Magnum with an 8 inch barrel??? How did those lil hands get around the grip and get a finger in the trigger? Let alone have the strength to pull the trigger. That baby’s arm or shoulder would be dislocated or broken….are they making the 2 yr old a scapegoat for a different child?
