PHILADELPHIA — An 11-year-old Philadelphia girl is dead after police believe her 2-year-old brother got hold of a loaded gun and shot her.
According to WCAU, 11-year-old Jamara Stevens was killed when she and her three siblings were playing with a .357 caliber handgun with an 8-inch barrel in their home just before 10 a.m. Saturday.
Police say the 2-year-old pointed the gun in the direction of his sister and pulled the trigger. They say they found traces of gunpowder on the boy.
Police say the fatal bullet struck the girl’s shoulder and then traveled to her chest.
It was reported that the mother was home Saturday morning with her children, but left the room just before the shooting occurred.
Police believe the mother’s boyfriend had brought the gun to the house earlier that day and placed it on top of the refrigerator.
Police say they do not know how the gun ended up in the bedroom.
Authorities say the girl was rushed to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, but died a short time later.
The incident is under investigation.
