CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte City Council voted Monday night to appoint Sen. Dan Clodfelter to complete the unexpired term of former mayor Patrick Cannon, that runs until December 2015.

WSOC-TV reported that Clodfelter has served as a member of the North Carolina State Senate since 1999, representing portions of Mecklenburg County. He will resign his Senate seat to assume the office of Mayor.

He was a member of Charlotte City Council from 1987-1993 and previously served on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission.

Born in Thomasville, N.C., Clodfelter graduated from Thomasville Senior High School and attended Davidson College where he was a Phi Beta Kappa and a Rhodes Scholar.

He graduated from Davidson in 1972 and received a second Bachelor’s Degree from Corpus Christi College in Oxford, England in 1974. Clodfelter earned his J. D. degree at Yale University in 1977.

He served as law clerk for Judge James McMillan of the U. S. Western District Court of North Carolina from 1977 to 1978 after which he entered private practice with the firm of Moore and Van Allen in Charlotte, where he continues to practice law.

He has also served as a Trustee of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation since 1982. Clodfelter is married to Elizabeth K. Bevan and they have two adult children.

North Carolina law requires that any vacancy in a city’s elective office be filled by appointment of its city council.

To be eligible, a candidate had to be at least 21 years old, reside within the city limits and be a registered member of the same political party as the person being replaced; in this case, a Democrat.

Charlotte has a council/manager form of government.

The mayor’s role is to preside over council meetings and represent the city officially.

The City Council is responsible for adopting laws and the budget.

Clodfelter will be sworn in on Wednesday at 12 p.m. at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Government Center.
