WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A taxi cab driver is recovering after falling asleep behind the wheel and colliding with a utility pole in Winston-Salem early Friday morning.

Emerson Joe Cash, a Willard’s Cab driver, was traveling north on North Liberty Street around 3:18 a.m. when he fell asleep behind the wheel.

The cab ran off the road to the right, collided with a utility pole, which broke on impact.

A portion of Liberty Street remains closed as crews work to repair telephone lines that are hanging low in the area.

Cash was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

It is not known when the road will reopen.
